Upgrade Aluminum to Copper
Better safe than sorry!
Aluminum wiring was commonly used in North America during the 60's and 70's. This was primarily because copper was expensive to build with during this period of time. If you're looking or have already purchased a house in the Ottawa-area that was built during this period of time, chances are it contains Aluminum.
Many of the home insurance companies in Ottawa and Ontario will not provide or renew insurance coverage on houses with aluminum wiring unless it's inspected by the ESA (Electrical Safety Authority). They may require you to repair or replace all wiring by a certified Ottawa Electrician.
What's Wrong with Aluminum Wiring?
It is estimated that there are over 450,000 homes in Canada that are entirely wired with aluminum. Reported problems are mostly related to the overheating and failure of aluminum wiring terminations, sometimes resulting in a fire. Experts have performed studies that have shown homes with aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to have existing fire hazard conditions compared to homes with copper wiring.
How to replace aluminum to copper?
There are different ways to approach this matter. We can change all your receptacles to approved receptacles for aluminum connections, although this can be fairly expensive and even run up to $20 per receptacle!!!
We, at Ottawa Electric, can provide a cost efficient and reliable service by adding copper wire to the ends of the aluminum wire with the proper material before connecting to a device approved for copper only. This is called a "pigtail". This will ensure your home wiring is safe and arc free which is approved by Electrical Safety Authority (ESA).
